Photo & Recap: Speedy Ortiz @ The Masquerade - Atlanta - 5/9/2018
Speedy Ortiz brought back their catchy indie-rock to Atlanta, this time as headliners and with a new album under their belt. Playing in a familiar stage and in front of a friendly crowd, the band blasted through some fan favorite songs from their recently released album, Twerp Verse.
The last time Speedy Ortiz played in Atlanta was last year as opening act for Tera Melos. It was interesting tour lineup and it worked very well. Speedy’s enigmatic guitars and killer melodies were a hard act to follow for guitar shredders, Tera Melos. It was clear that Speedy Ortiz deserved a new headlining show in 2018, and they got a great one at The Masquerade.
The Northampton, Massachusetts band started their set with the perfect trifecta of songs from their new album, Twerp Verse. “Buck Me Off”, “Lean In When I Suffer”, and “Lucky 88”, some of the best songs from the new album, quickly got the crowd warmed up. The LP may have been released only a few weeks before the show, but that did not stop the fans from singing along to the new tunes.
Led by the vocals and guitar of Sadie Dupuis, also known as Sad13, the band went through some more familiar songs and new indie classics like “The Graduates” and “Raising The Skate” (from their highly-acclaimed 2016 album Foil Deer) before moving on to older tracks like the fan-favorite “Taylor Swift”.
The set was a bit more synth and electronic sounding compared to the more guitar-driven 2017 show. A style that was probably influenced by Sadie’s solo album, last year’s Slugger (as Sad13). Anyways, Speedy Ortiz’ iconic (and almost impossible) guitar picking and mysterious lyrics were still present, leaving the crowd in awe throughout the gig.
